Rum is one of the most popular spirits there are, and for good reason. It’s extremely versatile, and there are tons of cocktails you can whip up with it. Although there are a lot of novelty drinks you can prepare using rum, you can never really go wrong with a classic.
Here, I’ve come up with a list of 5 classic, amazing rum cocktails that are sure to satisfy your taste buds, whether you’re a rum lover already or if you’re looking to try out some new drinks next time you go out.
Cuba Libre – one of the most popular rum cocktails

The Cuba Libre is, perhaps, the most popular rum cocktail there is, and you can never go wrong with it. Being made with one part of rum and two parts of cola and garnished with a wedge of lime, it’s one of the simplest alcoholic drinks out there.
The most popular variation of the Cuba Libre is the Captain and Cola recipe, served with Captain Morgan. Sometimes, if I want my drink to have a more intense rum flavor, I’ll opt for using something like a Diplomatico Mantuano.
Mojito

Even though it might seem a bit basic at first, the refreshing taste of the mojito is what makes this beverage so popular.
To make it, you need to mush together sugar, mint leaves and a few slices of lime in a glass until the sugar dissolves and all the flavors blend together. Then, top it off with one part of rum and two parts of tonic water and garnish with more lime.
The mojito is typically prepared with white rum, and for this cocktail I usually opt for a Bacardi or a Havana Club.
Mai Tai
The Mai Tai is an incredibly underrated drink, and it definitely needs to get more recognition.
It’s made using equal measures (6 parts each) of dark and white rum, along with 3 parts of orange curacao, 3 parts of orgeat syrup and 2 parts of lime juice. Its unexpected, tropical blend of flavors is sure to tickle you fancy even if you aren’t a rum lover.
Piña Colada

Piña Colada is a classic recipe full of tropical flavors that’s perfect for people who aren’t such big fans of cocktails that have a strong taste of alcohol.
It’s made with one part of white rum, one part of coconut cream and two parts of pineapple juice and garnished with more pineapple.
Daiquiri
The Daiquiri has similar flavors to those of the Mojito, except it’s more intense. It’s made with two parts white rum, one part lime juice and a bit of sugar syrup and garnished with lime.
If you enjoy the refreshing taste of the Mojito but you’re looking for a stronger drink with a more defined aroma of rum, then I suggest you give the Daiquiri a go next time you go out for a drink.
