Why Do We Love Cheese So Much and Is It Good for Us?


How often do you eat cheese? Is it part of your daily meals? Many studies have proved that most people love cheese. In fact, in many countries, the consumption of cheese has doubled over the past 40 years. For instance, the USDA shows that Americans have come to eat 37 pounds of cheese per person every year. But why are we so fond of cheese? And is this a benefit or a dangerous addiction?

More cheese, more happiness

There is a logical reason why we love cheese and why it brings people this sense of comfort. Apparently, it is all because of the fat. It releases endorphins, which are chemicals that make you feel relaxed and energetic. Therefore, the more fat cheese has, the bigger the feel-good factor.

Consequently, there is no wonder we enjoy dishes that combine all sorts of fats. Our brain requires them to function properly and release the chemical that makes us happy.

Cheese: Both Sweet and Savoury

As you probably knew already, cheese is a very versatile aliment. First, there are all the possible appetisers based on cheese that are so easy to make and so delicious.

Then there are also various ways of integrating cheese in most meals. For instance, many parents trick their kids into eating their veggies by adding cheese to them.

Cheese can fit all tastes

You might think you are one of the few people who don’t love cheese. However, have you managed to try all the varieties? There are, in fact, 650 types of cheese, so there might actually be one suitable for you.

Cheese can be produced in all kinds of forms, with various textures. English Cheddar is said to be the most popular one in the world. Then follow Parmesan, Roquefort and Brie, which are also among the favourites.

Cheese for Vegans and Lactose-Intolerants

No, I have not forgotten about the people who can’t consume cheese or who simply choose not to. Fortunately, there are options for you, too. The most popular option is tofu, which you might be familiar with. However, cheese can also be made out of almonds, cashews, aqafaba (the liquid from a chickpea can).

Moreover, there are some even more unconventional ingredients from which you can make dairy-free cheese. For instance, cream cheese can be obtained out of garlic, potatoes and even carrots. Sky’s the limit.

Is too much cheese dangerous for our health?

Obviously, there are benefits that cheese brings to the body. It contains high amounts of vitamins A and B-12, along with calcium and proteins.

However, an exaggerated quantity of cheese can still do you harm. Consuming too much lactose can cause digestive issues like gas or bloating. Even if you choose a dairy-free option, cheese contains no fibre. Therefore, it can be harder to digest and implicitly cause constipation.

That being said, even if we love cheese and the comfort it brings to our lives, we should also keep in mind that moderation is key in everything.
