Oh, folk metal bands! I’ve loved folk music ever since I was a tiny fella. However, when I was a lot younger I used to be afraid of metal music. The deep, scream voices frightened me. I don’t quite understand why, but little by little I started appreciating them.
I remember hearing Alexander Rybak’s songs, Fairytale, back in 2010. After that, I surfed on YouTube a little bit and came upon a “medieval metal” music compilation. That’s pretty much how I discovered my obsession with folk metal. So, in this article, I want to tell you about three Romanian folk metal bands that I absolutely love!
DIRTY SHIRT, ONE OF THE GREAT FOLK METAL BANDS GUYS FROM MARAMUREȘ!
In 1995, in the tiny town of Seini, Maramureș, four young fellas created a rock band. Later, this band chooses to adopt metal as their main music genre. With tons of folkloric elements, Dirty Shirt combines industrial and folk metal with funk and electro beats. It’s a pleasure to listen to them. I always have them on shuffle, on Spotify! I recommend all of you to listen to their song, Maramu’!
E-NA-NA, A PRETTY YOUNG ONE OF THE FOLK METAL BANDS WITH CATCHY SONGS
E-na-na became an official band back in 2014 when the vocalist, Andrei and the guitarist, Ovidiu, had in mind a project named “Prohod”. Little by little, other members entered the band. Quickly, the band expanded, by adding the bass, keyboard, drums and secondary guitar.
Unsurprisingly, they became quite popular! They won the second place in “Best metal newcomer” contest, at the 2015 Metalhead Awards! My favourite songs from them are Codru, Tinca Popii and Hora pe Furate. They are really lively, bringing an extra dose of energy whenever I listen to them.
AN THEOS, THE BAND THAT TELLS US STORIES ABOUT ANCIENT PEOPLE FROM CARPATHIANS
A Theos’ style is easy to recognize. Formed back in 2010, these guys embraced an epic folk metal music style. Every song they sing resembles stories written with musical notes! Every time I listen to their songs I feel like I play a hardcore video game about kings, knights and lots of battles.
Their songs Ai Codrului and Fiica Lunii are some of my favorites! The combination of the traditional instruments and the guitars is perfect!
Of course, there are dozens of other great Romanian folk metal bands that I haven’t talked about. I will write about some other bands in my upcoming articles. In the end, these metal bands are monumental! You can learn how to love Romanian folklore, traditional music and even a little bit of history. They give a lively and dynamic twist to traditional music and listening to them is always a pleasure!
