I think that every book lover can agree that one of the pleasures of autumn time is staying inside in your cozy blanket and reading a good novel.

Why is Rosamunde Pilcher’s writing so suitable for this kind of weather? The reason is that her book is a heart-warming family saga about the English countryside lifestyle that also comes with inspiring life quotes.

She believed, of course … because without something to believe in, life would be intolerable…

The Shell Seekers tells the story of Penelope Keeling and how she managed to survive through the World War II, a failing marriage and losing loved ones while remaining brave, kind and inspiring. Her life is presented through flashbacks and different time frames, giving you the impression of a friend walking you through a family photo album.

The title of the novel is the name of her father’s Victorian painting, Penelope’s last living memory of him. The painting becomes a symbol of family unity, something that Penelope tried to achieve in her countryside dream-like cottage.

The greatest gift a parent can leave a child is that parent’s own independence.

Her three children, Nancy, Olivia and Noel, as utterly different as they are, they become an important part of the novel’s story and one of Penelope’s purposes in life. With an open heart and a pragmatic attitude towards life, she wants to be an example for them.

The general atmosphere of the novel is bohemian, as we find out that Penelope was raised in this culture, at the seacoast, by her much older father and her French mother.

Living, now, had become not simple existence that one took for granted, but a bonus, a gift, with every day that lay ahead an experience to be savored. Time did not last forever. I shall not waste a single moment, she promised herself. She had never felt so strong, so optimistic.

Besides Olivia’s romance lived in Spain with a man named Cosmo, Nancy’s life frustrations, Noel’s charismatic but greedy personality and Penelope’s young adulthood story, this novel teaches us a great lesson about how important it is to stay true to yourself in life, how to fully enjoy it and most of all, how to remain strong and kind even in times of uncertainty.
