Summer is the season of freedom, a time when all of us give up our routines and take up all kinds of activities. It is the best time to start a new hobby or to revive an old one that you used to love. I find myself wanting to try new things in the summertime as I have a lot of time on my hands and the weather is perfect for spending time in nature.

  1. Cycling

My dad and I have formed a summertime tradition over the past few years so we go cycling together. We explored a vast part of our neighborhood last year and we even biked through the woods a few times. It is worth giving a try as it implies spending time outside, instead of being stuck inside the house watching movies.

  1. Painting

I am a very untalented painter, but that didn’t stop me from trying and having fun doing it! I feel that grabbing some color and expressing yourself on paper is one of the most beautiful ways of showcasing your emotions. There are no limits as to what you can create. The most important thing is to be creative and to feel good.

  1. Teaching your dog tricks

This has been my favorite thing to do last summer. I have two dogs that are full of energy and I have to keep them entertained especially when the summer heat is too much to handle after a run. One of my dogs loves to play fetch, while the other has learned to play dead and give paw in exchange for delicious treats. The key point of this summertime activity is to keep calm and not pressure your dog into cooperating if he doesn’t feel like it.

  1. Spice up your wardrobe this summertime!

Regardless if you know how to sew or not, you can change most of your old clothes by following YouTube tutorials. Two years ago I bleached a pair of jeans and now they are still my favorite pair to wear. I also removed the sleeves of a jumper and made it more summertime-appropriate. There are countless changes you can make to your clothes if you put in some effort.

  1. Having a picnic

We’ve all probably done this before, but I have a twist to this old-school idea. Instead of grabbing food and eating it outside, I suggest packing only fruit and vegetables and having a picnic near a lake or a pond. The reason why I only eat fresh fruit and veggies in the summertime is that I can’t seem to enjoy anything else because of the hot weather. I also love bringing along some ice tea or coffee.

  1. Reading

I’m certain that we all had an epiphany at one point and told ourselves that we need to read the books resting on the shelves before buying new ones. However, we lack time and always find something better to do. Summertime is the perfect period to catch up. If you don’t have a hammock, put a blanket on the grass and randomly choose one book you’ve always postponed the reading.

No matter what you decide to do during the summer, make the most out of it, and don’t forget to try new things- you might accidentally discover a new passion of yours.
