We live in a digital era where the devices we use become more and more advanced. Be it a brand-new iPhone model or a new Samsung device. Therefore, there are more and more people who frequent social media nowadays, compared to 10 years ago, for example, when the first-generation smartphones were released. Back then, owning a smartphone was a luxury but today it is a necessity.
Pros and cons of social media
Starting with the pros, I believe apps like Instagram and Facebook are great for promoting businesses. Nowadays, you can sell anything on social media. A decade ago, you couldn’t really imagine such a thing. If you want to sell a pair of shoes that don’t fit you anymore, there are high chances of finding a person who would love to buy them from you. Another advantage of social media is that news spread fast on most apps, so, we are always staying up-to-date with current events.
Now, I would like to point out the negative aspects of social media. I’m sure you know that social media affects our mental health in many ways. People tend to compare themselves to other people because they seem like they are leading a better life than everyone else. We see pictures of people traveling to expensive countries and wish we were in their place instead. Or, we see Instagram stories of people showing off their brand-new acquirements, such as expensive clothing, or the latest iPhone model, hoping we were the ones owning those instead. There is a constant state of comparing ourselves to other people, which only leads to experiencing several negative emotions.
Likes and dislikes could also be considered a negative aspect of social media. Humans crave likes and comments because their brains register them as a reward. Dislikes can lower one’s self-esteem and make them question their worth.
There is no doubt that social media has changed the way we live. It is warping our perception of reality, but at the same time, we can’t really live without it, can we?
