American scientists predict that in the US, social distancing orders may not end until 2022. That is unless they find a vaccine in the near future.
Researchers from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health carried an important study. It contradicts the study made by the White House, which suggests that the pandemic should stop this summer.
“Intermittent distancing may be required into 2022 unless critical care capacity is increased substantially or a treatment or vaccine becomes available. Even in the event of apparent elimination, SARS-CoV-2 surveillance should be maintained since a resurgence in contagion could be possible as late as 2024.”
The same Harvard team mentioned that the virus would quickly return once the government lifts the restrictions.
Dr. Marc Lipsitch is an author on the study and an epidemiology professor at Harvard. He stated that: “If intermittent distancing is the approach that’s chosen, it may be necessary to do it for several years, which is obviously a very long time.”.
Will people become immune to the new coronavirus after getting infected?
This is still unknown. It would be a great challenge to find a reliable test to determine who has antibodies for the coronavirus, based on the level of immunity conferred by previous infection and how long it lasts.
Would they create a separative society? Will some be able to return to their normal lives, while others won’t?
Researchers believe that this kind of long-termed social distancing will definitely have negative effects on society. Whether we’re talking about economic, social or educational changes, they are definitely going to take place.
However, Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that “social distancing is one of the most powerful weapons against Coronavirus”. While the economy and other similar aspects are fixable, health is more vulnerable and we should prioritise it.
“If we can just maximize that social distancing, we can limit this virus’ ability.”.
