It’s not a secret that all of us crave snacks at night. However, some of these cravings can seriously affect our health. We are so used to eating whatever we find, that we forget about the importance of good eating habits. Certain foods should be avoided at all costs before going to bed.
1. Chocolate
I know, it is painful to hear that one of the most delicious snacks in the world can be this harmful, but it was proven that chocolate contributes to restlessness during sleep. Moreover, it contains lots of sugar, calories, and caffeine. Even if you decide to take a single innocent bite, it won’t stop the cravings and you’ll find yourself in search of something else to eat.
2. French fries
Potatoes fried in a pool of oil before bed? That is a big no from me. They are high in calories and most importantly in fat and should be avoided on a daily basis, not only at night. Our bodies need time to digest food and eating fries before bed makes this very hard.
3. Chips
I think we all know how harmful salty snacks can be for our bodies, but consuming chips before bedtime is going to cause dehydration. You will be spending the rest of the night waking up and feeling nauseous. It is ideal that we stay away from them for at least three to four hours before going to sleep. Also, we tend to eat chips out of a bag and this makes us push past the limit. We keep eating and eating until we realize that we’ve finished a whole bag of them!
4. Watermelon
I am sure this is a surprise as fruit is very healthy in general. However, watermelon is sugary and contains a lot of water. Eating huge amounts of this fruit will make you stay alert all night as you will definitely need to use the bathroom a few times.
5. Pizza
Pizza is considered to be one of those mouth-watering snacks, but it sure isn’t what your body would enjoy receiving. The tomato sauce present in pizza can make heartburn worse and disrupt your night-time rest.
I know the feeling of craving snacks before bed, I’m very guilty of it as well but I’ve learned from my mistakes and no matter how hungry you get, I am sure that there are alternatives to these unhealthy options.
