Sigmund Freud’s Depiction of Daddy/Mommy Issues

The idea of daddy/mommy issues is quite recurrent in present-day society. It is one of the main issues Gen Z is struggling with. Even though this may seem new, Freud actually discussed it a long time ago. It appears that there were patients showing signs of these issues even in the early 19th century.

While talking to them in therapy, Freud took notes and gathered important information. Little did he know they were to become some of the most controversial psychological theories in history. Even after all this time, Freud’s depictions still manage to explain the mechanism of the psyche in a completely original way.

How does Freud define daddy/mommy issues?

Freud decomposed the psycho-sexual evolution into three stages of development. According to him, the third stage of development is called the phallic stage. That is when children attach feelings to their parents and even experience sexual attraction towards them.

When the parents aren’t somehow present in their lives, children can get stuck in that stage of sexual development. Therefore, later on, they show signs of daddy/mommy issues. Meaning, they continue their search for a parental figure to fulfil the need for affection. If you want to read more about the psychological explanation of this issue, click here. Romanticizing daddy/mommy issues

In the last two decades more than ever, youngsters have started to romanticize fancying people older than them. Therefore, relationships with age differences from10 to 20 years have become quite usual. The main arguments these people usually bring are the need for wisdom, maturity and balance in relationships.

However, there are others who are more attracted to the physical side of daddy/mommy issues. This resulted in various roleplays and kinks that people seem to be getting more and more into.

Are daddy/mommy issues bad?

According to Freud, daddy/mommy issues can in fact affect a person’s life negatively. They can lead to unhealthy future choices in romance. Unsolved issues with parents can determine people to get accustomed to bad habits. Therefore, they end up in unhealthy relationships, putting up with people they shouldn’t have to.

However, this issue can also be handled right. Some minds are able to create erotic pleasure out of an emotionally-charged past situation. In that case, the issue doesn’t have a negative effect, as it only represents a small part of one’s life.

After all, the key factor here is not allowing daddy/mommy issues to govern your life and not obsessing over past experiences. Instead, simply live in the present and enjoy every moment of it. And most importantly, never cease to ask for professional help.
