Shrek – 2001 Oscar for Best Animated Feature

Shrek is a 2001 American film produced by Dreamworks Animation Studios. The movie won the 2001 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. It is based on the story with the same name, written by William Steig.

The main character of movie is a giant green ogre, named Shrek. He lives in a swamp in the middle of the forest. He loves the solitude of his home. His quiet life is interrupted after Lord Farquaad of DuLoc exiles multiple fairy-tale creatures to his swamp.

Okay, fine. Attention, all fairy tale things. Do not get comfortable. Your welcome is officially worn out.

Angered by the intrusion, he decides to go to Lord Farquaad and asks him to move the fairytale creatures elsewhere. I’m a terrifying ogre! What do I have to do get a little privacy?”  Shrek and Lord Farquaad make a deal: Lord Farquaad will evacuate the creatures from the swamp if the ogre rescues the beautiful Princess Fiona from the fire-dragon castle.

Shrek – a parody of traditional fairy tales

A parody is a creative work designed to imitate, comment on, and/or make fun of its subject by means of satiric or ironic imitation.

The movie is a modern fairy tale in which the traditional tales roles are reversed: the handsome prince is replaced by the giant green ogre who rescues the princess and marries her.

Fiona is a modern princess. She knows martial arts and can take care of herself. She is waiting for the handsome prince but is shocked and disappointed that her rescuer is an ogre.

Lord Farquaad, who should be the handsome and brave prince, is small, fearful and evil. He wants to marry the beautiful Princess Fiona but does not have the courage to save her himself from the fire dragon castle.

Shrek – a story about accepting yourself for who you are

Despite his repulsive appearance, Shrek is funny and we feel sympathy for him. He is upset because people judge him by his appearance. He is rejected by those around him.

I’m not the one with the problem, okay? People seem to have a problem with me. People look at me and leave… He judges me before he knows me. That’s why I’m better alone.

Shrek considered himself a big, stupid, ugly ogre. This is the reason why he isolates himself in his swamp and decides to live alone. The friendship with the talking Donkey and the love for Fiona restore his self-confidence and change his life. If you are interested in finding other articles on our site about fairy tale movies, here it is: Disney movies – 3 amazing facts that prove evolution.
