If you like foreign languages, we are already best friends. Learning Portuguese is one of my favorite things to do. Portuguese is a Romance language originating in the Iberian Peninsula of Europe. It’s the official language in Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique, Angola, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, and another few countries. It evolved from the dialect of Vulgar Latin (medieval Kingdom of Galicia) and the County of Portugal and has kept some Celtic phonology and lexicon. It’s very similar to Spanish, indeed, but in the same time they are so different. You understand this only if you speak both of them
STOP ANYTHING YOU’RE DOING AND DO IT
I firmly believe that is the most romantic language. The songs, they are so romantic that they made me fall in love. You may think that not a lot of people can speak it, but, in fact, this language is spoken in more places than you think by more people you may know. Not everyone knows it (comparing to English, Spanish, French, etc), it’s not that studied. Speaking a less commonly studied language looks super cool on any résumé.
It’s easier for you if you already speak a romantic language. For example, I speak Romanian and it’s easy for me, I understand it better. Spanish, French, Italian, they all have something in common and one day, if you want, you can learn all of them. They have the same base, the same origins, the vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation are very similar. And if you can speak it, you can understand Portuguese, it can help you to understand one of these languages. Being a Romanian is cool because I can understand Spanish almost like my own language. I can watch series and listen to songs and understand them (approximately 80%).
HOW IT CAN HELP YOU AND WHY IS IT SO AMAZING?
It can help by introducing you in the business world. Portugal and Brazil are one of the best players in this “business game of the world.” Brazil, for instance is placed on the eight place of the largest economy. We all know they have ups and downs, but they are growing fast, so learn Portuguese to be one of their coaches! You may have a “culture shock” when you come to Portugal. Waves of immigrants came here and left their influences and traditions so this country is so exotic, different, completely unique. It’s influenced by Roman, Moorish, Germanic, Viking culture. You’d fall in love with their food, it’s one of the best in the entire world and their music would make you so happy, you can’t even imagine! There are so many influences and you’ll always have something new to learn. This is your sign, go get that degree!
