We all heard the word ‘phobia’ at least once in our life. The majority of us are aware of the common phobias such as claustrophobia (fear of confined spaces), arachnophobia (fear of spiders), or hydrophobia (fear of water). However, after reading a post on Instagram I discovered some uncommon phobias that may surprise you.
Macrophobia is the fear of long waits. Those who experience this, endure extreme anxiety when having to wait in a long queue or when being put on hold on the phone. Simple day-to-day activities represent extreme burdens to them. For instance, a person with macrophobia would choose online shopping rather than going to a store as they are afraid to not be stuck in a long checkout line.
Syngenesophobia is the fear of relatives. I find this one extremely strange. I am aware we all have relatives who we despise hanging out with. But there are people out there who feel immense anxiety when thinking about relatives, let alone when having to meet them. Those suffering from this condition may refuse to participate in family events in order to avoid seeing their relatives.
You may have deduced from the name, politicophobia is the fear of politicians. People who have it, posess an abnormal dislike for politicians. You can imagine how these people feel when election time comes around. What surprised me was that 1 in every 20 people has some sort of politicophobia. It’s not always about politicians, you can still suffer from this condition if you dread casting a vote or if you are afraid of the election results.
This one with the complicated name is the fear of dark wooded areas or of forests at night. In 1999 a survey was conducted and nearly 18% of people confirmed that they are afraid of dark wooded areas, while 41% reported that they would not venture alone or spend a night in a forest. To be honest I wouldn’t venture into a forest alone at night either and I admire those who have the courage to do that. I may be a scaredy-cat, but I would rather remain in the comfort of my own home.
I understand that there are hundreds more unusual phobias, but these are the ones I decide to present to you today. Who knows maybe after reading this article you discovered a new fear that you may have? It’s not a shame to acknowledge a fear of yours. I don’t think there’s one person out there who doesn’t have phobias.
