It is a truth universally acknowledged that oatmeal is part of a healthy and balanced diet. Oatmeal is so popular because is an excellent source of vitamins and minerals. There are many different types of oatmeal available in the market. How do we use them?

Oatmeal is typically rolled oats and is cut thinly so that they can be cooked within a few minutes. But oatmeal is available in several different varieties, including: oat groats, steel-cut oats, rolled oats and crushed oats.

Different types of oatmeal

1. Oat groats

Oat groats are the healthiest way to eat oats. Oats are whole grains. When the husk is removed from the oat kernel, the kernel is called an oat groat. They take much longer to cook.

2. Steel-cut oats

Steel cut oats are groats that have been toasted and cut into small pieces by steel blades. They have a heartier texture, a nutty taste and take about 30 minutes to cook.

3. Rolled oats

Rolled oats are softer, smoother and less chewy. For this type of oatmeal, the grains are steamed for longer and rolled thinner. They are more easily digestible. They take 1-2 minutes to cook.

4. Instant oats

Instant oats or crushed oats  are the fastest cooking: they take 30-90 seconds to cook. This type of oats is steamed longer, rolled thinner and chopped finely. Instant Oatmeal is cut too fine, and is not recommended for baking..

American pancakes

Oatmeal is one of America’s favorite foods for breakfast.  Every year, this healthy food is celebrated as the National Oatmeal Day on October 29th.  Because we are talking about American pancakes, I will tell you that America celebrate every year the National Pancakes day on September 26th.

American pancakes can be made with oatmeal instead of flour. These tiny pancakes get their unique flavor replacing flour with oatmeal. You get fluffy, delicious and healthy pancakes. But what kind of oatmeal is good for pancakes? For pancakes are good rolled oats. Here are 2 recipes for pancakes with oatmeal: pancakes with bananas and pancakes with yogurt. 

Pancakes with bananas


  • 50 grams of rolled oats
  • 2 well ripened bananas
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 50 grams of butter

Method of preparation:

  • Mix well bananas with eggs in a blender. Then add cinnamon, rolled oats and baking powder and mix well.
  • Heat the griddle slowly, first using a slow temperature, then moving to a medium temperature. Once warmed, grease it with a little butter. Add pancake into skillet in round circles.
  • Hold it for 3-4 minutes on one side and then turn it on the other side for 1-2 minutes. Pancakes need to be cooked at a medium heat. If you cook the pancakes at too low a heat, then they will turn out too tough. If the heat is too strong the pancakes will remain raw in the middle.
  • The pancakes can be garnished with banana slices and baked nuts.

Pancakes with yogurt


  • 50 grams of rolled oats
  • 1 cup yogurt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder

Method of preparation:

  • Blend all ingredients in a blender.
  • Use a nonstick griddle. Heat the griddle on low heat, then moving to a medium temperature. Add dough in the middle and level it with a spoon. Leave for 2-3 minutes, then return to the other side.
  • Add your favorite pancake topping and fresh fruits.
