Meet Smudge the cat from “Woman yelling at cat” meme

Did you hear about Smudge the cat? I think everyone saw or at least knows about this famous meme which became viral in a short time. We all shared it with friends and came up with our own captions, but do you know the story behind it and how the cat became the subject of the meme? Well, let’s reveal the mystery once and for all.

The cat behind the meme

The cat’s name, apparently, is Smudge. He’s 6 years old and he’s a rescue cat. According to his owner, Miranda Stillabower, Smudge the cat always gets a seat at the table, or else he will freak out, as she explained to CTV News.

“He will freak out if he doesn’t have his own chair,” Miranda Stillabower said Monday on CTV News Channel. She also said for TIME magazine that “he has an attitude for sure”. “He demands to have a chair at the table,” says Stillabower, 24. “He hates to not sit with us at dinner.”

But what caused the reaction that turned him into a meme? He hates vegetables. The owner says that he only eats meat, so he always hated vegetables. His face became so famous that he even has an Instagram page- @smudge_lord.

Smudge the cat has also been called “confused cat at dinner”.

Though it all started with a salad, Smudge’s owners have tested his reaction to other food. His distaste is apparently not limited to vegetables. Earlier this month, he made the same face at a plate of nachos.

The story of the meme

In the picture we know from the meme, Smudge the cat has a disgusted, confused, and displeased face towards the plate in front of him. Now, let’s go a bit back in time to understand what really happened.

One night in 2018, because he didn’t get a seat at the table, Smudge the cat stole one from a salad-eating guest. Claiming his place at the table, he wasn’t impressed with what was on the plate. His owner posted the photo on her Tumblr, but it wasn’t until the spring of 2019, more exactly on the 1st of May, when a Twitter user (@MISSINGEGIRL), combined the photo of the cat with a meme from The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.

The Real Housewives meme, captured from a season 2 episode, shows Taylor Armstrong crying, yelling and pointing while co-star Kyle Richards tries to calm her down. Put together, the collage looks like the actress is pointing and yelling at the cat which was sitting at the table, trying to eat his salad like a normal adult. “These photos together are making me lose it,” the tweet said.

Clearly, the internet loved it, and “woman yelling at a cat” became one of the year’s most ubiquitous memes.

The cat even has some famous friends, including Snoop Dogg, former NFL linebacker Bruce Davis, and wrestler-actor John Cena, who has posted the memes on his Instagram account on multiple occasions.

His owners even launched a merchandise website. They’re selling coffee mugs, T-shirts, sweaters, toques, and baseball caps- all with Smudge’s salad face.

And don’t worry about Smudge the cat getting tired of being a superstar: Stillabower says he receives “a ton of treats during the photoshoots.”
