Schools, colleges and other public facilities are to close due to the rapid spread of the coronavirus outbreak.
Taoiseach (Irish prime minister) Leo Varadkar said that the measures will take effect from 18:00 on Thursday until 29 March. He stated that important meetings and classes should be done online or on the phone. Having made the announcement in Dublin, Mr Varadkar added that indoor gatherings of more than 100 people and outdoor ones more than 500 people should be cancelled.
He also advised people to work from home, if possible. However, airports and ports will remain open, but with regulations that will be imposed to assure safety.

The first death in Ireland linked to coronavirus was made public on Wednesday. An elderly woman with underlying health condition passed away after contracting the virus. On Thursday, two other cases were diagnosed in Northern Ireland, bringing the total to 20.
Meanwhile, in the UK, two more people have died after testing positive for coronavirus, bringing the total number of deaths to 10. As of now, there are 590 cases of positive testing for the virus in the United Kingdom.
