Every woman has a moment when she falls in love with a certain lipstick, or a certain eyeliner, very difficult or even impossible to replace. But there comes a time when you have to accept the inevitable: that product can no longer be used because it has expired. And because it’s impossible for you to remember when you bought a lipstick and how long it takes until it expires, you need to know how to recognize expired makeup products.
What does it mean when it is written on the label “3M”, “6M”…
If you look at cosmetics, you will see a symbol with a number and the letter M – 6M, 12M etc. This is the term of use of the product, recommended by the manufacturer. M comes from “months”. So when you see 12M, you should know that the shelf life is 12 months from the time you open that product. Attention, the date on which you unsealed the product is calculated.
Here’s how to tell if your makeup products are expired:
Not all makeup products show clear signs when they expire, but there are some clues that can show you:
– the texture begins to change
– the smell becomes different
– the emulsions separate
– color changes occur
– a film is formed on the surface of the product
Foundation and concealer
A water-based product will last up to 12 months, while an oil-based product will last up to 18 months because the oil is a natural preservative. When the oil separates from the other ingredients, you should discard them. This way you will get an uneven and unsightly result. To avoid separating the components, shake the tube regularly.
Throw it away after 3 months, if you use it daily, and after 6 months, if you use it occasionally. Wet environments develop bacteria, which is why mascara is so short-lived. Bacteria also exist naturally on our eyelashes, and they are transferred from our eyes to the brush and mascara tube. How do you know it’s expired? Smells bad. If the mascara has dried in the tube, invigorate it with a few drops of baby oil.
Lipstick and lip gloss
Lipstick does not contain many bacteria, so it can be stored for 12 to 18 months. Although lipstick and gloss contain preservatives such as parabens, essential oils and vitamins to remove germs, they begin to decompose naturally after a year. If it smells bad or has changed its texture, throw them away. In the summer, keep the lipstick in the fridge to prevent the ingredients from being destroyed. And most importantly, do not apply lipstick immediately after eating, so as not to develop bacteria.
How do you store makeup products properly?
Each cosmetic product has its own peculiarities of storage, but there are also general rules for everything. Always put the lid / stopper on the product as soon as you have used it, keep it in moderate temperature conditions (neither too hot nor too cold). Do not lend to other people products that come in direct contact with the skin (lipstick, gloss, mascara). If you borrow them, it is advisable to use a makeup brush and thus prevent contact with the skin. Also, when going on a trip, pay attention to the conditions in which you transport them.
