Horimiya is one of the animes released this year. It is also one of the best-animated rom-coms that I’ve seen for a while. Besides that, the story is unusually developing. We are used to seeing our characters slowly getting to know each other and make a move. This is where Horimiya stands out.
Horimiya is characterized as shonen manga. This means that it has a targeted audience: boys between 12 and 18 years old. The name shonen literally has “boy” in the term. Consequently, there is a manga type – shojo dedicated strictly to girls. Therefore, this type of mangas aims to only teenagers that start to experience the same things around this age.
Now, we all know how these types of things work. Yes, there is a difference between the manga and the anime. But still, the characters are so completely blind to the fact that they are interested in each other. It’s like they know, but something just won’t click. Rather than being interested in them, most characters will think that the other person is totally in love with their friend. And the action is developing in slow motion. Talking to each other? A few weeks. Looking at each other? Months. Actually, figuring out they’re interested in you? An eternity. I really like rom-coms, but sometimes they drain me out.
I haven’t read the manga, and I intend to. Due to the fact that the anime is not finished, I have to wait a week for a new episode. BUT. It is the perfect rom-com. I sense so much maturity in the characters, even if they are still in school. They are able to observe and affirm their feelings to each other. They get over the problems so much faster and easier than your average rom-com couple. And the most important thing: they want to know more about each other so that they can understand each other more. Even the side characters are mature and understanding, even if problems still exist.
Lastly, I am looking forward to seeing more of how their relationship will develop, as well as the other characters. Horimya is currently at episode 5, and it’s airing each Saturday. Go have a look and come back with your opinion. So, you’re curious about Horimiya, go for it!
