Germany charges China with €149 billion for ‘coronavirus damages’. Angela Merkel, the chancellor of Germany, sparks outrage in China. On April 15, an important newspaper declared that Beijing owes Berlin an enormous sum.

However, Germany is not the only country that directs its anger towards China. Meanwhile, France, the UK, and the US have done the same.

The US president stated that China would have to face the consequences if it was “knowingly responsible” for spreading the virus. He warned on Saturday that China should face consequences if they were “knowingly” responsible for the whole Coronavirus pandemic.

“It could have been stopped in China before it started and it wasn’t, and the whole world is suffering because of it. If it was a mistake, a mistake is a mistake. But if they were knowingly responsible, then there should be consequences” declared president Trump. However, Donald Trump has repeatedly accused China of lacking transparency.

The German newspaper, Bild, created a list of the damages China will supposedly pay for. The list includes €27 billion for lost tourism revenue, about €7 billion for the film industry, a million an hour for the airline Lufthansa, and €50 billion for the small businesses.

What was China’s response?

The Chinese government answered by declaring the invoice “stirs up xenophobia and nationalism”.

This entire outrage sparked after the city of Wuhan decided to revise its number of fatalities. There was a sudden jump of 50% in the figure. This led to many thinking that the Chinese government covered up data on the way the pandemic affected the country.
