Essential oils are known for their therapeutic properties and are frequently used in aromatherapy and not only. The use of essential oils dates back to the years 3000 – 2500. For centuries, herbs, oils and essences have been used for medicinal purposes, as a basis for remedies, for personal care.

How are essential oils obtained?

Pure essential oils are only those obtained by steam distillation or cold pressing. Only with these methods the therapeutic properties of the oils remain intact and unaltered. For aromatherapy, it is advisable to use only pure essential oils. Did you know that you need 50 roses to get a drop of essential oil? I know, that’s crazy!

Steam distillation is the most common method of extracting essential oils. In steam distillation, the water is boiled, and the steam obtained passes controlled through the vegetable material. The steam transports the essential oil from the plant into a collection tube, where the steam is cooled by passing back into the water.

Cold pressing is a method that does not use heat. Cold pressing is used exclusively for citrus fruits because it is a way of extracting the essential oil from the outer layer of the fruit peel. It is called “cold pressing” because, unlike steam distillation, it does not use a heat source.

The benefits of essential oils

Repressed and hidden emotions- due to the way the aromas are processed by the brain, aromatherapy can help you deal with repressed and hidden emotions. It creates your intimate and safe environment in which you can process certain events that generate strong emotions. You can diffuse lavender essential oil around the house to reduce the level of stress.

Immune system- some essential oils can support the immune system in the fight against pathogens. Some examples of such oils are incense, eucalyptus, oregano, ginger, lemon, cinnamon or mint;

Anxiety-several countries like China, the Netherlands, Germany or France use essential oils distributed in oncology care to reduce patients’ anxiety before surgery or to prevent malaise after chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Recommended essential oils include lavender, bergamot, orange, rose, incense and ylang ylang.

Dandruff removal – combine 5 drops of rosemary and lavender essential oil with 3 tablespoons of simple jojoba oil. Massage the scalp well and leave on for 10 minutes. Clean the mixture with shampoo and rinse.

Reduce toxicity in the body – this property is due to stimulating the detoxification process in the body; some essential oils act as mild diuretics and others aid digestion. Detoxifying oils are: grapefruit, lemon, parsley, mint and ginger.

Perfume – use 1-2 drops of jasmine essential oil on the wrist. Lavender or vanilla oil is equally suitable for women, while cypress or clove oil is suitable for men.
