Dry skin: 3 amazing tips and tricks

Dry skin: my worst nightmare! I am one of those people with such sensitive skin and hair, my skin is always dry and my hair always falls off. My cheeks always get red, my hair ends always split, after shaving my skin is so dry and red and usually, my skin is so dry that I just want to cry in front of my mirror. It took me a while to understand that being a little more careful when it comes to my skin, would save it.

Throughout the years, I’ve learned amazing tricks, I’ve seen dermatologists and now I can share with you some advice. It’s not that serious as it seems, factors like hot or cold weather, low moisture in the air, soaking in hot water, influence the most. You can fix the problem on your own, home, but if it gets severe, go see a specialist.

These are the symptoms: a feeling of skin tightness, especially after showering, bathing, or swimming, skin that feels and looks rough, itching (pruritus), slight to severe flaking, scaling or peeling, fine lines or cracks, gray/ashy skin, redness, deep cracks that may bleed. You should see a doctor when: your skin doesn’t improve in spite of your best efforts, dry skin is accompanied by redness, dryness and itching interfere with sleeping; you have open sores or infections from scratching and large areas of scaling or peeling skin.

I didn’t know it is such an important aspect, I had to learn this the hard way. Try to limit your time, instead of 30 minutes, try 5 or 10 minutes. Soaking in hot water will only cause burns, even though you don’t feel it, you’ll see later on your skin when little pieces will come off (very tiny dry skin particles). Wash your skin with gentle gestures, get rid of sponge baths (use it only when you’re really dirty, otherwise you’ll only cause little bruises, even though you don’t see or feel it’s a very important aspect).

Use oils, cleansers specially made for this kind of skin. Dry your skin gently with a towel, don’t rush, do it gently. Moisturize your skin immediately. When you shave, shave underwater without any product, or use conditioner, baby oil, shave cream, and after you finish, try to moisturize every time.

Deodorants, soap, only make your skin drier and itchy; they are too harsh for the skin. Instead, use natural and liquid deodorants, and of course, instead of soap try cleansing creams, gentle skin cleansers, and shower gels with added moisturizers. The best products are ointments and creams because they are more effective and less irritating than lotions.

Look after these ingredients: jojoba oil, dimethicone, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, lactic acid, lanolin, mineral oil, petrolatum, shea butter. To get rid of “dry hands”, use a non-greasy hand cream and apply it after each hand washing. If the products contain alcohol (except for hand sanitizer), alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), fragrance (including deodorant soaps), retinoids, you should throw them away, they are not good for the skin at all.

On windy and cold days, cover your skin as much as you can, wear gloves, wear a scarf. Make sure you choose non-irritating clothes and laundry detergent. Stay warm without cozying near a heat source; remember: stay warm, not hot! You don’t have to put your face on a heat source to be warm.  Use a humidifier, it’s one of the best investments in a house. Wear lip balm! This one too is so important. I hope from now on, you’ll be more careful and you won’t let your skin to be worse and worse.
