Coping with body hatred: the silent struggle no one notices

Raise your hands if you at least once in your life have experienced the silent struggle of body hatred. Some days consist of staying away from mirrors, hiding under your oversized hoodie, avoiding people at any cost, while trying to survive another day without bursting into tears. At one point, I am sure we have all been there.
I already know the answer to this question, but still find myself angrily thinking about it: Did our society really became so unfairly cruel and vain? It’s no wonder then why we are prone to detesting our bodies. Maybe we can’t change society within a snap of a finger but we can surely change the way we feel about our bodies. Here are some tips that will hopefully help you overcome any body image issue.

Social media causes more harm than good

In the last decade, social media has started molding the world’s beauty ideals more than it has ever had before. It gave rise to body comparison and started encouraging people to change in order to fulfill some unrealistic and unnecessary beauty standards. Not only can this cause body hatred but it can also lead to many serious mental illnesses, on top of my mind is body dysmorphia. Having that in mind, do not let the social platforms affect the way you see yourself. Limit your time scrolling through social media apps. And keep in mind that most of the “perfect bodies” you see there are not perfect at all let alone real.

Praise the power of your body

Another wat of combating this struggle is by thanking your body for the tiniest and most absurd things possible. For instance, you can BREATHE IN the fresh crisp air in the early morning. You can RUN and feel the grass beneath your feet. We are able to TASTE delightful food. Through our skin, we FEEL the soothing warmth of the sun. Our ears let us HEAR the melodic sound of the waves. We are able to witness and SEE the sunrise and sunset. Isn’t this more than enough to celebrate? Our body is doing so much already. It’s sad how one single negative remark, which most of the time comes from a stranger, makes us forget about our bodies’ superpower in an instant.

Write a love letter to your body

For most of you, this may sound somewhat awkward and even cringy. However, a love letter dedicated to yourself can make the whole difference in the world and help you overcome the struggle of body hatred. No one is asking you to write a 1000-word essay, but rather a couple of positive things you love about your body and reasons why are you grateful for it. At the end of the day, gratitude is what makes you aware of everything in life. Therefore, let your body know how much you appreciate it. Moreover, there’s nothing to be embarrassed about. You are the only one that will see this letter. So, this is your chance to be as emotional and raw as you wish.
Whenever you feel like you struggle with body hatred, remember this thought: beauty standards will come and go. They are changing in the twinkling of the eye which makes it impossible to meet them. Therefore, learn to live in your present body. Embrace it in its current form and start loving it to infinity before it’s too late.
