Coco Chanel, the woman who managed to change the fashion industry. Chanel, the brand that was created by this legendary woman. I assume everyone heard of the brand, but in this article, I’ll be focusing on the woman behind the fashion house. After reading about her life, I decided to present some fascinating things about Coco Chanel.
Although the world knows her by the name Coco, that was just a nickname.
Her real name was Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel. She received the nickname Coco when she worked as a singer for a short period of time. It is rumored that she got her legendary nickname from a song called “Qui qu’a vu Coco?” (meaning “Who has seen Coco?”).
Coco Chanel grew up in an orphanage
Unfortunately, her mother died when she was 12 and her father abandoned her in an orphanage. At the orphanage, she was raised by nuns. These nuns taught her the art of sewing, a skill that will be essential for her later in life. She was also taught how to iron and how to embroider. She left the orphanage when she was 18.
It all started with hats
Coco Chanel started her fashion career by designing and selling hats. She opened her first shop in Paris in 1913, being helped by one of her male admirers. After her hats became popular, Coco started to sell clothes as well.
The little black dress
It is said that every woman should have a little black dress in her closet. Well, this legendary piece of clothing was introduced to the world by none other than Coco Chanel. She invented this dress in 1926 and Vogue Paris predicted that it would be an instant success. Vogue named the dress “the frock that all the world will wear”.
CHANEL No. 5
Oh, yes, the famous perfume. Chanel No. 5 was the first-ever perfume to be named after its designer. Chanel created her first perfume in 1921. If you were ever curious why she chose number 5, it was because a fortune-teller told Coco that 5 was her lucky number.
Coco Chanel gave freedom to women
She revolutionized the entire fashion industry. Not only were her designs elegant, but they were also comfortable and practical. Women were finally able to get rid of those uncomfortable corsets. Chanel was even brave enough to shorten the length of the skirts. It was incredible at that time that ankles were visible while wearing a skirt.
Coco Chanel’s last words
It seems that even her last words were iconic. On 10 January 1971, she died in Hotel Ritz at the age of 87. Her last words were addressed to her maid Celine: “You see, this is how you die”. What can I say, she remained legendary up until the end.
The CHANEL Logo
Coco Chanel was the one who created the logo for the brand Chanel. The double C logo was designed in 1925 and it remained the same to this day. Coco Chanel was known for her simpler designs, which can be seen in the minimalistic aspect of the logo.
Coco Chanel was a woman who wasn’t afraid to experiment. She laid the foundations of a fashion house that is still so popular these days. She had a difficult childhood, but she worked hard and became one of the world’s most famous women.
