Christmas: the most wonderful time of the year. That time of the year when we visit our relatives, gather around the fireplace and drink hot cocoa with marshmallows. That time of the year when we put up the Christmas tree and hang shiny ornaments on it. Apart from all that, one of my favorite things to do during this time of the year is watching movies. Christmas movies, of course! Here are my favorite picks:
Home Alone (1 & 2)
This Christmas series is a classic. I think they are the most recommended movies to watch during this time of the year! TV channels all over the world have been playing the Home Alone franchise every year since its release.
The plot follows Kevin McAllister (starring Macaulay Culkin) and his bad luck of being home alone during Christmas. In both movies, Kevin wishes for his family to disappear right before the day they have to leave for vacation. Much to his dismay, that is exactly what happens! His family would always forget about Kevin (considering that he is the youngest in the family and it’s hard to keep track of so many children). And that’s how he either wakes up to an empty house or ends up boarding the wrong plane on his own.
In the first Home Alone movie, Kevin has to protect the house and fight against two burglars who intend on breaking in. He sets up traps inside the house and proves he is a genius, despite his age. In the second movie, Kevin gets on the wrong plane and arrives in New York, instead of Florida, where his family is for the holidays. The boy books a luxurious hotel room using his dad’s credit card and successfully tricks the hotel staff into letting him stay. However, he has to face the same two men (who tried to rob the house) once again! What a crazy coincidence, right?
Fortunately, Kevin doesn’t get hurt and the two men end up getting arrested every time. In the end of both movies, he reunites with his family and Christmas is saved.
The Family Stone
Another one of my favorite Christmas movies is The Family Stone (2005). It’s a great comedy-drama film with a star-studded cast. The Stones reunite for Christmas when Everett, the favorite and successful son, brings his girlfriend Meredith to meet the family. But it is revealed that Meredith and the Stone family are polar opposites. The Stones are liberals and open-minded in comparison to Meredith, who is very much conservative and uptight. There is an awkward tension because of Meredith’s presence which leads to Meredith asking her sister, Julie, to come over. Julie, on the other hand, is adored by Everett’s family. Her arrival causes more problems and leads to Everett developing feelings for her. Therefore, his plan of proposing to Meredith is long forgotten and the movie follows with many twists and turns which I believe you’ll enjoy!
