Burnout: 4 signs you have it and 3 ways to help yourself

Burnout: Being is a student is extremely tiring and it does take a lot out of you, especially in these really unsure times. A lot of us find ourselves in positions we’ve never been in before, like staying at home and dealing with family issues, but also being present and trying to put hard work into your assignments. It can all come to an end when you become aware of how little you can now do. This is burnout. This means that you can no longer work or function properly.

There are a few things you can do to find out if you are in a situation of burnout:

  1. You are not sleeping enough (mostly because you have other things to do)
  2. You do not have enough time to take proper care of yourself
  3. You are essentially exhausted
  4. You can hardly concentrate

If you do realise that you are burnt out, there are a few things I recommend you to do:

  1. Start by taking a break to care for yourself

Burnout comes when we no longer have time to help ourselves feel at our best, that’s why I suggest you take a few hours to take a nice bath, give your skin the love it needs, put on a hair mask, meditate and definitely clean your room. Having a clean space counts for more that you can imagine.

  1. Try light yoga

I know, rolling out a yoga mat and changing into active wear is pretty annoying and even tiring and time consuming if you are burned out. I suggest you just do some light stretches on your carpet in your pyjamas so there is no pressure on you. Once you find the littlest bit of energy to feel your body, I promise you that there will be some hope in you that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

  1. Just sleep

Okay, sure, you don’t need to take a bath, nor do light yoga, you are really tired and the best thing you can do is just sleep. Burnout can also mean that you just need to prioritize yourself. You need to realize that any problems you might try to solve, any assignments you are supposed to hand in, anything is not worth sacrificing your health this way. So take a nap or a full night’s sleep if it is really late and you will wake up with just enough energy to power through your next day.
