This is the date Italy will always cherish. What happened? What does April 25 mean for Italy and why is this topic trending everywhere? Oh, well, let me introduce to you the Liberation Day. Oh, bella ciao, let’s begin!

So, you’ve guessed right. Almost anytime you see a date trending on Twitter, it means something happened many years ago. And it was something important, something that might have changed the world from some point of view.

April 25 or 25 aprile is commemorating the end of Nazi occupation during World Ward II and the victory of the Resistance in Italy. On this day, 75 years ago, 23 years of fascist dictatorship and 5 years of war came to an end.

Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and almost every single platform is assaulted by photos, images, and messages from Italians / for Italians. It is a day not simply of national remembrance, but worldwide. Why? Because this is one of the moments when humanity was stronger than the Nazis’ cruelty. This is the glorious moment when a terrorized country succeeded to defeat the enemy: its own leader.

What does this mean? It means history is not forgotten. People that died, people that suffered, traumas, and collective wounds are remembered. Nowadays, from 1945 to 2020, the whole world hasn’t let the atrocities of WWII fall into the darkness. Every year, they are brought up in the light so no one could ever forget.
