Jean-Baptiste Grenouille and his talent
Lack of love turns him into a monster
At the age of thirteen, Grenouille is sold to Grimal, a tanner. Although the work in the tannery is very hard, Grimal carries out his activity exploiting orphaned children. Grenouille quickly understands that at the slightest disobedience Grimal will beat him to death. He is content with very little and is among the few workers who can withstand the harsh conditions of the tannery. His obedience also brings a benefit: he can carry goods to customers. Thus he has the opportunity to know every corner of Paris with the help of his sense of smell. He is able to retain all the odors encountered and is interested in knowing as many new smells as possible.
One day he smells something that excites him. He seeks to identify what emits this odor and discovers that the scent came from a girl. He is unable to communicate with her and strangles her.
