A movie that reminds us how important smell is in our lives is Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. The film is the 2006 screening of the novel Perfume by Patrick Süskind, directed by Tom Tykwer. The actors in the main roles are Ben Whishaw, Dustin Hoffman, Alan Rickman.

Jean-Baptiste Grenouille and his talent

Grenouille has been without love since birth. The woman who gave birth to him did not want him. He is entrusted to a nurse and then arrives at Madame Gaillard‘s orphanage. He is a strange child and the residents of the orphanage do not like him. Grenouille has a highly developed sense of smell. At the age of six he can barely speak, instead he learns to know the world around him through the smell.

Lack of love turns him into a monster

At the age of thirteen, Grenouille is sold to Grimal, a tanner. Although the work in the tannery is very hard, Grimal carries out his activity exploiting orphaned children. Grenouille quickly understands that at the slightest disobedience Grimal will beat him to death. He is content with very little and is among the few workers who can withstand the harsh conditions of the tannery. His obedience also brings a benefit: he can carry goods to customers. Thus he has the opportunity to know every corner of Paris with the help of his sense of smell. He is able to retain all the odors encountered and is interested in knowing as many new smells as possible.

One day he smells something that excites him. He seeks to identify what emits this odor and discovers that the scent came from a girl. He is unable to communicate with her and strangles her.

Creating the perfect perfume

It is interesting how the movie presents the life of the main character.  Endowed with a special sense of smell, Grenouille will not use his gift for the good of society. On the one hand, we see the difficult conditions in which the orphans of the eighteenth century had to live. On the other hand, we notice that none of the people around Grenouille showed him kindness or goodwill.
When he reaches maturity, Grenouille discovers that he does not have a personal scent, although he has a very developed sense of smell. In fact, he is odorless. This gives him an answer to his problem: Why no one likes him. He finds the solution to obtain people’s sympathy and love: he will create the perfect perfume.

But I don’t want to reveal more of this movie. I invite you to see it if I have awaken your interest. If you are interested in finding other articles on our site about movies, here it is: Why You Should Watch “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”
