Manhwas with a protagonist which plays the role of a villainess has recently become one of the top searched manhwa plots in 2020. The usual plot is centred about a woman who dies and is reincarnated as a rich tantrum-throwing spoiled girl whose life is at risk.

How did villainess centred manhwas become so popular?

In my opinion, the plot attracts a lot of people because of the main character’s dramatic background. But also because she has to go through a lot of hardships to stay alive. This appeals to readers as a form of escapism from the real world and their own problems.

1. The Villainess Lives Twice

Artezia Rosan’s life has been centred around her brother and assuring his success. Her love for her brother went as far as committing crimes and becoming a master manipulator. But soon her brother betrays her which transforms her into a true villainess. When she was rescued by the Grand Duke Cedric Ebron. She turns back in time a few years but still swears her loyalty to Cedric.

2. What it takes to be a Villainess

Hwayoung is reincarnated in the infamous villainess Satiana Altisee Kaylon. Satiana is chosen as a candidate for the spot of the next empress. In the cold palace, the protagonist must become a true villainess in order to keep her family safe. But villainesses need love too…

3.The Villainess Turns the Hourglass

After her mother had married a count, Aria enjoyed a life of luxury while bullying her stepsister, Mielle. Several years later, our protagonist is executed for her evil deed. This is when we find out the true nature of Mielle. She reveals that she was the one who tricked Aria into the bad reputation she had gotten. Just our main character wishes for a miracle she finds an hourglass which takes her back in time. Now with the power of the hourglass Aria is set on taking her stepsister down, as a true villainess would.

4. Beware of the villainess

After dying in an accident, a normal college student wakes up in the body of Melissa Foddebrat. She wakes up as this story’s villainess and she is determined to live up to her name. She was nobody’s favourite so she plans to just live her life the way she wants.

5. A villain is a good match for a tyrant

One day, the tyrant Estiel sent a marriage proposal to our main character, Cecil. She was forced into this marriage and was resilient about it. But she soon changed her mind when she saw the handsome face of her husband. He also likes her back. So does that mean for her to live happily with her tyrant husband that she has to become a villainess herself?

6. The Villainess Falls for the Notorious Noble

The main character dies in an accident and gets reincarnated into the game of an otome game she used to play. She finds herself in the body of the villainess who is abandoned by the prince. She gets into trouble with some thugs but luckily a young man appears

7.You’ve Got The Wrong House, Villain

Our female lead gets reincarnated as a poor child in the slums. She was taken to the city and became an experiment subject. After being freed from the laboratory she moves into a house next to this novel’s heroine. Initially, the heroine was to discover the wounded villain and heal him. So why is the villain collapsed in front of her house?

This type of manhwas plot has taken over and flooded the internet. I think it is only fair this becomes a sub-genre of its own.
