6 engines with major manufacturing defects

To satisfy their customers, car developers try to create engines with a cylinder capacity as small as possible and as powerful as possible, these being the new requirements for buyers. But sometimes this need is prevented from being fulfilled by manufacturing errors, which stop production and thus the customers’ orders paid in advance. I’ll show you some engines you must be able to avoid unless you want your car to meet the mechanic very often.

6. Brand: Volkswagen/Škoda /Seat 1.2 HTP (2001-2009)
Engine codes: WY, AZQ, BME, BMD, BBM, BZG, CHFA, CEVA
Affected models: Škoda Fabia, Škoda Roomster, VW Fox, VW Polo, Seat Ibiza, Seat Cordoba
Reasons: On these engines, the distribution chain can even jump in parking, if we leave it in a ramp for example. Low induction coil life is a problem; the engine does not stir high speeds and sustained highway driving. The oil gets slightly hot, and due to deposits, the cam followers destroy and burn the valves.
5. Brand: BMW N45
Engine codes: N45B16, N45NB16, N45B20S
Affected models: BMW 116i, BMW 316i (E90), BMW 320si
Reasons: N45 in addition to high consumption and low power (116i), irregular walking, three cylinder driving, we also have to deal with abnormal vibration due to the timing chain. The spread of the distribution chain and the orientation of the guide and tension pads causes problems. The producer used a board to improve the stretch but did not resolve the problem permanently. On the 320si, because of the small distance between the cylinders, they crack.
4. Brand: Ford 2.2 TDCi
Engine codes: PUMA ZSD-422
Affected models: Ford Ranger
Reasons: Whether we are talking about the 120 hp engine or the 150 hp engine, this engine, regardless of the power it has experienced, has many problems, the most known one being the high oil consumption.
3. Brand: Volkswagen/Audi/Skoda 2.0 PD TDI (Piezo-PD)
Engine codes: BKP, BMR, BRD, BMN
Affected models: Audi A3 2.0 TDI/125 kW, Audi A4 B7 2.0 TDI/125 kW, Seat Altea/Leon/Toledo 2.0 TDI/125 kW, Škoda Octavia RS TDI (do 2008), Volkswagen Golf/Jetta 2.0 TDI-PD/125 kW, Volkswagen Passat 2.0 TDI-PD/103 a 125 kW, Volkswagen Touran 2.0 TDI-PD/125
Reasons: Soot deposition and injector short-circuiting problems stop the car without any warning, anytime and anywhere. On the 170CP model, the particle filter replacement can only be performed with the original one.
2. Brand: BMW N63 4.4 Biturbo (2008 – 2012)
Engine codes: N63B44
Affected models: BMW 750i/Li, BMW X5/X6 50i, BMW X6 ActiveHybrid, BMW 550i (including Gran Turismo), BMW 650i (coupe, Cabrio)
Reasons: The biggest problem is engine cooling. The mistake is to position the two engine benches of the super supply turbines delimited by a sheet only. It is almost impossible to cool the engine; hot spots appear where the engine oil can boil. All this will damage the cooling system. Deposits appear on the turbine rotors, which fry the cylinder heads. Next, the variable control of the valves is destroyed, including the camshaft and the valve guides.
1. Brand: Dacia, Renault 1,2 TCe; Nissan 1,2 DIG-T (2012-2016, Euro 5)
Engine codes: H5FT
Affected models: RENAULT Clio, Captur, Mégane, Scénic, Kadjar, Kangoo, but also on Dacia Duster, Lodgy, Dokker, and Nissan Qashqai, Juke and Pulsar.
Reasons: This engine has a manufacturing fault which can lead to excessive oil consumption. This situation leads to a high risk of the exhaust valve inside the cylinder ceding, which could cause the engine to suddenly fail. This is more likely to happen for machines running in a weighted urban environment.
