Latin expression “mens sana in corpore sano” comes from Satire X of the Roman poet Juvenal. It is translated as “a healthy mind in a healthy body“. In Satire X, Juvenal’s intention was to reveal to his fellow citizens that “the gods who had provided virtue to men”.
In 1861, the Englishman John Hulley used the phrase “mens sana in corpore sano” as the motto for his athletics club in Liverpool. So, he gave Juvenal’s expression another meaning, linking it to the importance of physical exercise in ensuring health.
In the specialized literature, there are several definitions of health. We will mention two of them.
