Latin expression “mens sana in corpore sano” comes from Satire X of the Roman poet Juvenal. It is translated as “a healthy mind in a healthy body“. In Satire X, Juvenal’s intention was to reveal to his fellow citizens that “the gods who had provided virtue to men.

In 1861, the Englishman John Hulley used the phrase “mens sana in corpore sano” as the motto for his athletics club in Liverpool. So, he gave Juvenal’s expression another meaning, linking it to the importance of physical exercise in ensuring health.

In the specialized literature, there are several definitions of health. We will mention two of them.

  • The first definition is that health is the absence of any disease or infirmity. The World Health Organization (WHO) constitution states: “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”
  • Another definition is that health is a state of balance:
    • a balance that man has established with himself/herself and
    • a balance between him/her and the environment in which he/she lives.

Physical activity helps to maintain health. Exercises done regularly help to maintain muscle mass and improve the body’s flexibility and resistance.

The three main meals must be respected daily: breakfast, lunch and dinner. They will consist of fruits and vegetables, meat and foods rich in protein and carbohydrates.

Learn continuously and develop interest in new things.

  1. Connect with the right people for you

Make friends who help you get to know yourself better and understand your purpose in the world.

  1. Get enough sleep

Sleep is an important factor to keep you healthy and active.
