So you’re telling me you’ve never watched RuPaul’s Drag Race? Well, I won’t judge you about that but still, you need to give it a try because is one of the greatest reality TV shows I’ve ever watched. I’ve been a fan of RuPaul’s Drag Race for almost 4 years and I am still obsessed with it. I’m sure you’d become addicted to it just as fast especially now with RuPaul’s Drag Race season 13 coming out every week and RuPaul’s Drag UK season 2 airing too. I still thought that just telling people that the show is amazing won’t be enough so here I’ve gathered 5 reasons why you should start watching RuPaul’s Drag race right now.
- The shade, the shade of it all
What you need to understand from the start is that RuPaul’s Drag Race is a competition between a bunch of drag queens competing in different challenges to win well… the race. Every week a queen is eliminated until we get to our final three or four queens, or even our final two queens. It all depends on Ru Paul, to be honest. Now if you’re not familiar with drag race you might not know this but drag queens usually have very big personalities. They’re funny, talented, witty, and very entertaining. So obviously every season we have at least two queens bumping heads because they don’t see eye to eye. Now don’t get it twisted, every fight usually just consists of funny shady comments that most of the time are not even malicious. This still doesn’t make them less entertaining to watch and they end up being iconic moments that people would quote for the rest of their lives. Let’s be real now, we all watch reality TV for the drama so I assure you that RuPaul’s Drag Race won’t disappoint you when it comes to drama. Pro-tip: most of the fights happen in Untucked, a mini-series that is linked to each episode of the show, in which the queens go backstage after they’ve heard the judges’ critiques and chat. And sometimes some queens give their opinion about other queens and their opinion might not be that well received and well then the chaos is unleashed.
- Plenty of content
Now, honey, I’ve only started watching RuPaul’s Drag Race in 2018 and I wish I’ve started watching it earlier because it is just amazing. The first season of RuPaul’s Drag race has aired in 2009 and since then there have been 13 seasons including the one airing right now, along with their respective Untucked episodes and with RuPaul’s Drag Race UK season 1 and season 2 that is airing now. Besides these, we also have the special RuPaul’s Secret Celebrity Drag Race and the RuPaul’s Drag Race YouTube channel. So what are you waiting for? Did I scare you with all this content? Well trust me, you’ll think it’s too much for you to handle at first but once you get into it you won’t get enough of drag race.
- Getting to know the drag race “herstory”
Watching this TV show you’ll come across some of the most iconic drag queens ever like: Bianca Del Rio, Trixie Mattel, Katya, Violet Chachki, Bob The Drag Queen, Raja, Raven, Manila Luzon, and many more but I need to stop cause otherwise this will turn into a list of all my favorite drag queens, and that’s a long list trust me. Besides this, you will learn a lot about the ballroom traditions and other things linked to the history of drag queens and the LGBTQ+ community. This show has helped me learn more about the LGBTQ+ community and it really educates people on some important issues in our society that are not often discussed openly. A lot of the drag queens’ life stories have moved me to the point of tears and I am sure that you will also empathize with some of their struggles and learn to be maybe more aware of what is happening in other communities that are often marginalized.
- All the laughs and the memes
RuPaul’s Drag Race is hands down one of the funniest reality TV shows I have ever watched. And that of course is due to the drag queens that are so witty and goofy that they are unintentionally funny. Now don’t get it twisted, there have been some comedy queens on this show that are truly stand-up comedy geniuses, but in general, all the queens are just so entertaining to watch interact with each other or give memorable one-liner confessionals. And each season is just a gold mine of memes and quotes that you’ll find yourself using all the time. From Bianca Del Rio’s iconic “Not today Satan, not today.”, to Latrice Royal’s 5Gs “Good God get a grip girl!” and of course the legendary RuPaul quote “If you can’t love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else?”, there is a meme and an iconic line for every taste.
- The sickening artistry
And last but certainly not least, the gorgeous, amazing, breathtaking art of drag is one of my favorite aspects of this show. Let’s make something clear: drag is art! The artistry that is presented on this TV show is so impressive and iconic that I can’t even put in words how much I love watching the process of drag queens getting in drag and seeing the gorgeous results on the stage. RuPaul’s Drag Race has seen some of the most amazing make-up artists ever like Miss Fame, Kim Chi, Raven, Nina Bo’nina Brown, Blu Hydrangea, and many others that are able to create iconic make-up looks on themselves and others as well. Also, some of the fashion queens in this show have presented on the runway amazing garments that are worthy of Vogue magazines and Paris and New York fashion shows. Violet Chachki, Aquaria, Detox, Sasha Velour, Nicky Doll, Raja, and Shea Couleé are just a few of the most stylish drag queens to have ever walked the runway on the show, creating amazing looks that would leave fashion designers speechless. And let’s not forget the art of lip-syncing which is just as important as any other aspect of drag. The show has seen some amazing performers like Alyssa Edwards, Jujubee, Kennedy Davenport, Yvie Oddly, Brooklyn Hytes, and many more that delivered some legendary lip-syncs.
So you got: dancing, singing, lip-syncing, make-up, fashion, comedy… I mean there is something for everyone in this TV show. If you’re not convinced yet here’s the trailer for the new season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, watch a few episodes and I am sure you’ll be hooked. You can thank me later.
