We already know avocado is good on toast and in sushi, but did you know it’s also good for your hair? For many of the same reasons, the fruit — yes, avocado is technically a fruit — is beneficial for your health and hair.
Avocados are extremely moisturizing and nourishing because they contain natural oils and both polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids (the “good” fats). While these oils can be beneficial to all hair types, they’re especially helpful for dry, dehydrated hair.
1. Banana + Avocado + Coconut Oil
The potassium and natural oils in bananas soften the hair and protect the elasticity to prevent split ends and breakage-it’s a savior for brittle, damaged hair.
Coconut oil has been shown to absorb easily into hair and protect the strands from outside damage. You can add more coconut oil if you prefer more of a liquid mask. Apply to start at the tips of the hair and work your way up to the scalp.
2. Avocado + Honey + Olive Oil
The ingredients repair dry, brittle hair and protect your hair from further damage—a great option if you’re addicted to your blow-dryer and hot tools. The avocado is also rich in vitamins that can nourish the scalp and help hair look healthy, shiny, and hydrated. The emollient properties of olive oil will help soften hair.
3. Avocado + Honey + Lemon + Olive Oil + Essential Oil
This mask—a favorite of Kourtney Kardashian and created by stylist and hair expert Andrew Fitzsimons—blends a handful of common household ingredients with essential oils for a spa-worthy experience. Mash the avocado, and mix in the olive oil and lemon juice. It’ll look like soupy guacamole.
Lemon juice is antifungal and may help reduce oil and dandruff. But if not properly rinsed, it may temporarily bleach the hair.
4. Avocado + egg + olive oil
In addition to the moisturizing benefits of avocado and olive oil, eggs are rich in protein, which helps strengthen the hair and protects against split ends and heat damage. Blend the ingredients together with a fork or spoon. Whisking will work in a pinch.
You will need 2 egg yolks, 2 teaspoons of extra virgin olive oil, and half of a ripe avocado. Mash avocado and mix in egg yolks. Coat hair, cover with a shower cap and leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse with cool water and then proceed to shampoo and condition as usual.
5. Aloe + avocado
Aloe has anti-inflammatory properties that can soothe the scalp, and the vitamin content in both aloe and avocado will nourish hair. One thing we love? It promotes hair growth. So whether you’re combating thinning hair, or you simply want to urge your hair to grow faster and longer, this is a great hair mask for you.
All these masks are great for your hair, either you want to try something new or you are desperate to have that shiny, silky hair. No matter the reason, you should definitely try these!
