Over the last decade, fanfiction has become increasingly popular, especially among teenagers and young adults. If you’re part of a fandom, especially if it’s a very popular one such as Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings, chances are you’ve already stumbled upon fanfiction before, and you might have read some of it too.

Reading fanfiction is a great way of spending your free time, and I’m here to show you that writing it can be just as good as – if not even more satisfying than – reading it. Here are 3 reasons why it’s a great idea to start writing fanfiction:

1. Fanfiction can fuel your creativity

If you’re a writer and you’re experiencing something like writer’s block, trying your hand at writing fanfiction might help you overcome that. Writing fanfiction doesn’t necessarily mean you have to come up with new characters or even invent new plotlines, which means you can hone your writing skills in any way you like. One of the greatest things about fanfiction is that it has no rules, so you can write however you like.

If you’re feeling uninspired or you’re not sure where to begin, using writing prompts is a great way to start. You can browse through Archive of Our Own or Tumblr to find some writing challenges, or you can write for something more mainstream like Flufftober or Angstober.

2. You can anonymously write about anything you like

If you’re like me, you might be feeling a bit self-conscious about what others will think of your writing. That problem is greatly reduced when writing fanfiction, since everything is anonymous, therefore the chances of someone you know in real life stumbling upon your work are rather slim.

Now, that’s not to say that there might not still be people who don’t like your work (and who might be rather vocal about it, too), but you shouldn’t let that stop you. I think the best way of dealing with hate is to remember that not everyone is going to like the same type of content, and that at the end of the day, you’re writing for yourself, so if you’re satisfied with your fanfiction then that should be enough.

3. You can modify canon in any way that you like

What I love the most about fanfiction is that it enables you to use and modify fandoms, characters, plotlines and settings in any way you like. If you don’t like the fact that Jaime Lannister is dead, for example, that’s not a problem. You can bring him back to life, and you can even genderbend him, you can make him fall in love with Jon Snow or you can write a Harry Potter crossover and make him a Hufflepuff.

Anything is possible when writing fanfiction, and I think that what makes it so appealing to so many different people is the fact that it has no rules, and therefore no constrains – if you can think of something, you can write it, and no matter how wild or strange it might sound, chances are there are at least a few people out there who are absolutely going to love it.
