Confectioneries – or cofetării, as they’re known in Romanian – are very popular in Bucharest, and you can find hundreds of them around the city. They’re stores that typically sell cakes and pastry products, and they’re definitely worth visiting if you ever travel to Romania.

Although there are many great confectioneries all over Bucharest, I thought it would be a good idea for me to share my favorite places to go to when I’m craving something sweet. The confectioneries on this list are a bit different than regular ones, but that’s precisely what makes them be so highly appreciated by their clients.

Maison des Crepes

As its name suggests, Maison des Crepes specializes in selling crepes, pancakes and waffles – which is what makes it different from traditional confectioneries. Maison des Crepes sells both sweet and savory dishes, so although it could be classified as a restaurant, the reason why I added it to this list is because the sweet items on the menu are usually what people go there for (although the savory versions I’ve tried in the past were also pretty good).

Having gained popularity in the last couple of years, Maison des Crepes now has several locations open in Bucharest, and a few ones in other cities as well. Asides from the fact that they serve delicious pancakes at reasonable prices, their locations are also cozy and have a lovely atmosphere which is sure to make your visit a pleasant one.

French Revolution Eclairs

Another one of the non-traditional confectioneries, French Revolution Eclairs is known for the wide variety of eclairs they have available. In their permanent collection, you can find flavors ranging from a classic chocolate eclair to passion fruit or salted caramel eclairs, and they also have limited edition flavors available for occasions such as Easter.

The eclairs are prepared by hand every day in their 4 Bucharest shops, and with so many great options to choose from it’s unlikely that you won’t find something you enjoy among them.

Mara Mura – one of the more traditional confectioneries

Unlike the previous confectioneries on this list, Mara Mura is the closest to what you would traditionally expect to find in a cofetărie. They have a have a wide variety of sweets you can choose from – from cakes and choux to cookies and cake pops. Asides from selling extremely high quality products made with fresh ingredients, what makes Mara Mura stand out the most is its décor.

Their shops are beautifully decorated in a style that seems to be a mix between Alice in Wonderland and cottagecore, and you’ll almost feel as if you’re part of a fairytale when you go and eat there – especially if you visit their Ateneu location on a sunny day and have the chance to eat outside on the terrace.
